Andy Warhol Inspired Artwork
What is the most important part of the bike? This artwork is now on display in our Learning Commons, along with artifacts from bikes that we have laying around. The steps are below, as are some samples of student work. Enjoy!
Brainstorm: Students brainstormed all of the parts of the bike. Students shared, discussed, and justified what the most important part of the bike was. Students then received pictures of bikes to look at an explore. |
Zooming In:
Students were given a viewfinder to focus on specific parts of the bike. The viewfinders were used to remove negative space and allows students to concentrate on the part of the bike they believed to be the most important.
Sketching:
Students completed 3 initial sketches of their chosen part. They received feedback from their peers as to how to improve their initial work. (Sketch - Feedback - Sketch - Feedback - etc.). Students were welcome to change their drawing based on feedback, or if they determine that another part is more important they may completely switch what they are drawing.
Enlarging:
Using 9x9 watercolor paper, students chose their best sketch, and used sharpies to draw their image. Students focused on the lines. There was no shadow, no shading. What curvy and straight lines best represent the bike parts?
Shading:
Each table had a different colour of watercolour pucks that they could mix to create a variety of shades of the same colour. Students only painted the negative space (they didn't paint the object). The colour went on the part of the artwork they didn't want the viewers to focus on).
Writing:
Students then completed writing about their pieces entitled, The Most Important Part of a Bike.

"The most important part of the bike is the wheel. It is the only way the bike can move without dragging. It supports the handles by helping the bike turn." - NC
"The most important part of the bike is the break because without them you would crash into things. Imagine you were about to fall off a cliff when you were mountain biking with no breaks, you would die." -KS
"Without a seat on your bike, you would be biking with a metal pole stuck up your behind!" - LK
"I think the most important part of a bike is the gear because it connects the wheel and the brake." - NO NAME! Add your name!
"I think the most important part of the bike is the chain, because if the chain falls off, you can only move the bike with your feet!" -JZ
